Gloria Shih is recognized in her native Taiwan as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. She won her first piano competition at age of eight, and subsequently received many awards including Taipei Piano Competition first prize, chamber music competition second prize, and first prize in the Schimmel Piano Competition.
Miss Shih earned her Bachelor’s degree at Soochow University where she was a protégé of the renowned Se-Se Chang. She has appeared in numerous solo and chamber music performances in Taiwan. Prior to Stony Brook, Ms. Shih was a scholarship student of Lilian Kallir at the Mannes College of Music where she got her Master’s degree. While at Stony Brook she was a full scholarship student of Christina Dahl. She won the Concerto Competition and performed under the direction of David Stern.
Ms. Shih has participated in master classes of such distinguished artists as Leon Fleisher, Pascal Deveyon, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Claude Frank, Gilbert Kalish, Seymour Lipkin, Vladimir Feltsman, Jane Coop, Diane Walsh, Boris Lavof and Orion String Quartet.
Ms. Shih has worked with members of the Emerson String Quartet, members of the Meridian Arts Ensemble, and members of the Metropolitan Opera. Her performances have included venues such as Carnegie’s Weill Hall, Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, Lefrak Concert Hall, Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall and Emerson Festival. She has received critical acclaim for her performances throughout Asia, Europe and North America, including engagements in Philadelphia, North Carolina, Westchester, California, Maine, Oregon, England, Japan, and South Korea. Ms. Shih received her doctoral degree from Stony Brook Univerity in May, 2005.
She serves on the faculties of the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music and the Great Neck Music Conservatory. |
